The Katha Upanishad states this:
अन्यच्छ्रेयोऽन्यदुतैव प्रेयस्ते उभे नानार्थे पुरुषं सिनीतः ।
तयोः श्रेय आददानस्य साधु भवति हीयतेऽर्थाद्य उ प्रेयो वृणीते ॥
Anyach-chreyo-anyad-utaiva preyas-te ubhe nānārthe puruṣaṁ sinītaḥ |
Tayoḥ śreya ādadānasya sādhu bhavati hīyate-'rthād-ya u preyo vrṛṇīte |
This means that ‘The truly beneficial (Value) and the merely pleasant (Cost/Comfort) are two entirely different things. Both approach a human being with different purposes. Well is it for him who chooses the beneficial/value, but he who chooses the pleasant out of a scarcity of vision falls short of the true goal of life.’
Very often cost and value are used interchangeably and that is a problem.
Cost is nothing more than a number, a temporary price tag that measures what you have to give up in the present moment.
Value is the investment in the future. Looking at the cost brings out a scarcity mindset and keeps you small. However, looking at the value makes you choose the growth and the lessons that can be gotten from it.
Don't measure your life by what things cost you; instead measure it by what they add to you.
