We have all heard it - ‘Work hard. Keep hustling and go for your goals.’
However, many of us work ourselves to the bone but end up burnt out, bitter, and nowhere close to the finish line.
Intense effort often leads to exhaustion instead of achievement.
A Sanskrit Subhashita (a well-known saying) mentions this:
यो यमर्थं प्रार्थयते यदर्थं घटतेऽपि च ।
अवश्यं तदवाप्नोति न चेच्छ्रान्तो निवर्तते ॥
Yo yamarthaṃ prārthayate yadarthaṃ ghaṭate'pi ca |
Avaśyaṃ tadavāpnoti na cecchrānto nivartate ||
This means "If a person wants something, and if he/she makes efforts to achieve it – without getting tired (or without getting overwhelmed in the process) - then no doubt he/she will get it"
This Subhashita gives you a three-point vision to reach your goal.
The first one is intention.
We all know that we cannot hit a target that we cannot see. So first we have to set a clear intention that is ‘prarthayate’, as mentioned in the verse. Most people fail because their goals are either vague or unclear.
After taking the first step, the next is action. That is ‘ghatate’ of the verse, which means actively planning and executing it.
The final step is protecting our energy.
This is where the magic lies. The verse acknowledges that the path to the goal will be long and tiring. But the difference between those who succeed and the others is not talent, it is consistency.
Sustained action, even when we are not in the mood or fatigue has set in, is what is required.
The verse ends with a promise - ‘Avasyam Tadavapnoti’ that is, you will undoubtedly obtain it.
So the Subhashita promises that if your goal is clear and you put in real effort and consistently keep to it, success is not just possible, it is inevitable.
Just remember what you are working towards is on its way to you, as long as you do not stop going towards it.
