The Compass of Truth

A small compass needle swung wildly inside a violent storm at sea and could not stay still.

The wise old captain realized the truth. ‘A trembling needle does not mean you are lost. It just means you are still finding your true north.’

We live in a culture where we celebrate individuals who project unshakable conviction. It is mostly because of this that when we feel uncertain about anything or oscillate, we mistake our uncertainty for failure.

This reaction is normal among all of us.

‘If I were truly strong, I wouldn't feel this anxious.’

‘If I knew what I was doing, I wouldn't question everything.’

Consider the example of a compass needle for a few seconds. The only reason a compass is useful to sailors is because it is delicately balanced and free to respond to all the forces acting on it. During a storm, the compass needle trembles not because it has lost its polarity, but because it is resisting the chaos and trying to align with the Earth's magnetic core.

This trembling is not a sign of decay, but recalibration.

The Hitopadesha brings out a similar truth in this Subhashita (a well-known saying):

कदर्थितस्यापि च धैर्यवृत्तेर्बुद्धेर्विनाशो न हि शङ्कनीयः ।

अधःकृतस्यापि तनूनपातो नाधः शिखा याति कदाचिदेव ॥

Kadarthitasyāpi ca dhairyavṛtter buddhir vināśo na hi śaṅkanīyaḥ |

Adhaḥkṛtasyāpi tanūnapāto nādhaḥ śikhā yāti kadācideva ||

This means: ‘Even when a person of steadfast temperament is tormented, shaken, or distressed by circumstance, one must not fear that their inner intellect and direction are destroyed. Even if fire (tanūnapāt) is pushed or held downward, its flame never points down—it always reaches upward.’

This Subhashita reminds us that our integrity and inner strength are just like a flame. External circumstances might turn the world upside down, but our orientation is inherent to our nature. Our resilience is not like a stone, but like fire. The fire adapts and will always point upwards.

So next time you feel your inner resolve shiver, remember that you are not broken nor are you adrift.

You are just reorienting yourself to find your true north.
