It is human nature to swell with pride during times of success and panic during times of turmoil.
However, a Sanskrit Subhashita (a well-known saying) mentions something quite different:
विपदि धैर्यमथ अभ्युदये क्षमा ।
Vipadi dhairyamatha abhyudaye kṣamā |
This means that ‘Courage in times of adversity, and humility in times of prosperity.’
At its core, this Subhashita outlines two distinct phases of every individual - the test of hardship and the test of triumph.
When the storm hits, just remember that it does not blow to destroy us, but to test if our roots are deep enough to hold.
Remaining steadfast when everything seems to fall apart is not ignoring pain. It is just keeping your composure so that you can navigate through this storm.
If hardship tests our endurance, success tests our character.
It is easy to become arrogant when circumstances favour us. But true strength in the times of abundance does not come by asserting dominance, but from remaining grounded and lifting others up.
By mastering both these conditions, you build a mind that neither breaks under pressure nor swells under praise.
It is just a resolute, enduring spirit that lives on through the legacy that it creates.
