As a society, we are obsessed with life hacks and morning routines, and that is where the problem lies. We do not realise how important focus is for us. Centuries ago, the legendary Sanskrit poet Bāṇabhaṭṭa, whose verses were preserved in the Śārṅgadhara-paddhati, mentions this:
अङ्गणवेदी वसुधा कुल्या जलधिः स्थली च पातालम् ।
वाल्मीकश्च सुमेरुः कृतप्रतिज्ञस्य धीरस्य ॥
Aṅgaṇavedī vasudhā kulyā jaladhiḥ sthalī ca pātālam |
Vālmīkaśca sumeruḥ kṛtapratijñasya dhīrasya ||
It translates to: "To a person of firm conviction, the vast earth is like a courtyard, the ocean a small pond, the netherworld (Patala) just a walkable path, and Mount Meru like an anthill."
When a person does not have a clear direction, a minor inconvenience feels like a mountain. But when you become a Krta-Pratijna, that is, someone who has resolved to achieve a specific outcome, your relationship with any hurdle or obstacle changes. You realize that the world around you is not shrinking and the opportunities begin to grow.
So how do we bridge this gap? It requires a shift from passive thinking to active decisions.
There is a huge gap between saying that ‘I am going to try to launch this,’ and saying that ‘I am going to launch this.’
When something seems as huge as a mountain, break it up into small tasks. One small step is definitely a step forward and will make the mountain manageable eventually.
The verse uses the word Dhịra, who is a calm and composed person. People like these are not loud or frantic. Instead they have a quiet, steady mind that cannot be shaken by the chaos outside.
So make yourself so resolute that the mountains in your life look like anthills and the oceans look like puddles.
Happy travelling!
