The Power of the Pack

The Hitopadesha mentions this:
संहतिः श्रेयसी पुंसां स्वकुलैर्अल्पकैरपि ।
तुषेणापि परित्यक्ता न प्ररोहन्ति तण्डुलाः ॥
Samhatiḥ śreyasī puṁsāṁ svakulair-alpakair-api |
Tuṣeṇāpi parityaktā na prarohanti taṇḍulāḥ ||
This Subhashita (a wise saying) means that ‘Unity with one's own people, however small or humble they may be, is the greatest source of strength. Even a grain of rice, if separated from its husk, loses its power to sprout and grow into a new plant.’

A grain of rice is valuable. Rice is our food, it gives us energy and it is what we sell in the market.

The husk of the rice is dry and is seemingly worthless because it cannot be eaten or sold.

However, if we plant a pristine polished grain of white rice even in the most fertile soil, it will never sprout. It will not grow, because the grain needs the protective husk to sprout.

This is not just a farming tip, it is also an important lesson in reaching human potential.

We may be the most talented person in the room, but we need to be connected with our ecosystem - our mentors, our peers, our roots. Without our ‘husk’, we take away our own capacity to grow. This husk or group around us shields us from elements of doubt and criticism.

So if you want to stop wasting away in isolation and start growing to find your own potential, identify your husk - the people who keep you grounded. It could be your friends, family members, colleagues - it may be anyone. But these are the people who are with you and they should be valued.

Look for partnerships where your strengths and weaknesses complement those of another person. Because unity takes effort, it means putting ego aside and supporting others, even as you are trying to sprout.

We cannot achieve sustainable growth by taking away the connections that anchor us.

Remember, cherish your community and lean on your pack. Because when the smallest forces are together, they become unstoppable.
